History Of Dora Ryu

Dora Ryu Jiu Jitsu is an art that has been in development for over 40 years. The art itself takes ideas from the military, street smarts, Tae Kwon do, and Karate, with the main structure coming from the art of Jiu Jitsu.

Dora Ryu Jiu Jitsu is mainly broken into 5 sections, Kata, Sparring, Grappling, Self-defense, and Special needs. Though each part of the art is separate and has it’s own identity, they are also interconnected like strands of thread through a rug.

We will first talk about Katas, and their role in Dora Ryu Jiu Jitsu. Kata in the Dora Ryu system is mainly Jiu Jitsu based, however some katas are derived from Tae Kwon Do, and Karate. The Katas range from very basic moves to intricate techniques that can be used in many areas of combat and self-discipline.

Sparring in the Dora Ryu system is done a couple of ways; one is through continuous sparring where the students continue to fight until the time period is up. When they are sparring they use the rules set at the time of the fight, this could be standing only, or could also include throws and takedowns.

Self-defense is the most intricate part of Dora Ryu Jiu Jitsu. Self Defense flows through Dora Ryu like water in a river. It is used in every aspect of Dora Ryu, from Kata’s like Kee Ka Ryu Tiger to grappling, Sparring and Special Needs.

The final area, but certainly not the least is Special Needs. Dora Ryu Jiu Jitsu is a style that as we have seen can be adapted to many different fighting styles, attitudes, & ages so it goes without saying that it would be able to be used for all types of abilities. Therefore persons with special needs become a part of Dora Ryu as much as Dora Ryu becomes a part of them.

Ranking System

The ranking system in Dora Ryu is very similar to other martial arts. The lowest rank we have is white belt, progressing through to brown. The following is a list of the ranking system, and explanation of the higher ranks.

WHITE
YELLOW
ORANGE
GREEN
PURPLE (YOUTH 16 AND UNDER)
BLUE

Sempai (Assistant instructor, literally “senior”): This is a term used for Brown belts. They are students who are learning how to teach.

Sensei (Instructor, literally “one who came before”): This is a term for all black belts; the belt is a black belt, sometimes seen with red or gold stripes to denote rank.

Renshi (Professor, “polished teacher”): This is the first level of professorship; this term is used for black belts that are holding a rank of 4th or 5th degree black. The belt is a red, white & black belt. When the white stripe is on the top this person is a 4th degree, if the red stripe is on top this person is a 5th degree. For 5th degree there is also a belt that is in blocks of red and black.

Shihan (Professor, literally “teacher of teachers”): this is the second level of professorship. This term is used for 6th, 7th, and 8th degree black belts in the Dora Ryu system. The belt is in blocks of red and white.

Hanshi (Senior Professor) This is the highest rank in the Dora Ryu system and is used for 9th and 10th degree black belts. The belt is a solid red belt.
